Rwanda Gakenke – subtle elegance from the heart of Africa

Rwanda Gakenke – Muhondo Grade A1 is a coffee with an exceptionally harmonious and intriguing flavor profile, created for connoisseurs who appreciate subtle yet distinctive notes. The beans of this 100% Arabica coffee come from the Gakenke region, where local farmers deliver the cherries to the washing station on foot or by bicycle, with remarkable dedication to tradition and quality. Located at 1900 m above sea level, the region is known for its ideal climate conditions, allowing for exceptional flavor clarity and aromatic elegance.

This coffee delights with a complex profile – sweetness blends with notes of rum and red wine, complemented by citrus freshness and a delicate floral aroma. The washed processing method brings out the clarity and depth of flavor, and the high SCAA score of 87.50 points confirms its outstanding quality. Rwanda Gakenke is a true story in a cup – full of nuance, light yet expressive and unforgettable.

Wine, rum, and citrus – a surprising depth of flavor

From the very first sip, Rwanda Gakenke reveals remarkable depth – a coffee with a chocolatey, velvety texture where notes of rum and red wine take center stage. These are balanced by juicy citrus acidity, and the entire profile is enriched by delicate floral tones. This combination creates an exceptionally elegant and complex brew that captures attention and leaves a lasting impression.

This uniqueness is due not only to careful bean selection but also to the special conditions in the Gakenke region – subtropical climate, high elevation, and meticulous processing. Muhondo – the washing station where the beans are processed – has been awarded multiple times in the Cup of Excellence competition, further confirming the world-class quality of this coffee.

Ideal for filter and pour-over methods

Rwandan coffees, especially those from the Gakenke region, are known for their subtlety and require precise brewing to fully express their character. Rwanda Gakenke performs particularly well with pour-over methods – Chemex, drip, or V60 highlight the balance between citrus freshness, floral aroma, and wine-rum depth. This results in a delicate and clear brew without excessive intensity.

It also performs beautifully in a French Press or AeroPress – where it reveals its creamy texture and long, velvety finish. For best results, we recommend a brewing temperature of 93–94°C and a medium-fine grind. Rwanda Gakenke is the perfect companion for calm mornings – a coffee that not only energizes but also inspires.

View of the Gakenke region

Gakenke – a unique place on the world's coffee map

The Gakenke region is one of the most fascinating coffee-growing areas in East Africa. Located at 1900 m above sea level, it offers excellent conditions for producing high-quality Arabica – fertile soils, ideal humidity, and cool nights contribute to the slow ripening of the cherries, resulting in greater complexity and depth of flavor.

The Muhondo washing station has played a key role in the development of the region – not only by providing infrastructure for coffee processing but also by improving the living conditions of local communities. Thanks to it, farmers receive fair wages, training, and access to clean water. And we – get the chance to enjoy one of the world’s most refined coffees.
